If it can baby I'd love to get one in a few years. I'm thinking M Sport package with the HK stereo and a few other options. Dark color with red coral leather.

I'd assume that it can baby fairly well. My E90 can comfortable fit 4 full sized adults and a pretty decent amount of luggage in the trunk. The leather is also pretty easy to keep clean.
Most importantly, you still get a fun car!

I'd probably go for the 428i, since gas mileage will be a bit better and 240hp is enough for daily driving duties. Besides, I'm sure it's just a Dinan tune away from seeing 300hp.

Key words: "In a few years". I also would love to pick one up in a few years... once somebody else has taken the initial depreciation. They're beautiful cars with good dynamics and hopefully a manual transmission. Not to mention it'll give me and my Audi-driving friend something else to bicker about

I would probably just swing for a 435i GC. I drive a 328i, and I love the NA I6. If I'm gonna be driving a turbo car, might as well get one that already has some extra "oomph". It'll be more reliable at that higher power level, which means it could just tuned even higher!

Considering the residual value on a 2013 335i off a 36 month lease is 59%, I would imagine snagging a nicely equipped 428i for around $30,000.

I might be stuck with the 435i, since I can't imagine finding very many 428i's with the M Sport package.

I doubt this will be the case now that the 328/428 is a turbo, but the NA I6 on the E90 attracted lots of enthusiasts. There's tons of M-sport/sport package E9x wagons, convertibles, sedans, and coupes available on the market. The pickings are a little more slim if you want a 6MT, but they are definitely out there and they aren't too hard to find.

You and I think very similarly. I'll be looking for a car in roughly 3 years, and I refuse to buy new, so I've been looking at 2015 MY cars coming off lease. If I could snag one with <40k miles for $30k, I wouldn't be opposed

So um, you know the pic you posted isn't actually the real 4 GC right? This is the real one:

So the N20 with its 240 hp and good low end torque is probably "good enough" but the N55 is a noticeable step up.
As for mileage, in my 135is I get about 20-21 mpg in mostly city driving with the sport button turned on. 25-26 on the highway. Not terrible, not great. Right about dead on with its EPA rating of 18/21/25.
Looking just at #s without any hands-on experience, the 328i is EPA rated 23/26/33. The EPA annual fuel cost estimate ("based on 45% highway, 55% city driving, 15,000 annual miles and current fuel prices") is $500 higher for the 135is over the 328i. A bit less if you're not driving 15k miles/year.
So yeah, aside from purchase price, you have to decide if the extra fuel cost is worth it for the extra ~60 hp.
Like Ferris Bueller says, "It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up."

Yup, just grabbed the first picture I could from bimmerpost.

If I can get away with a performance tune that'll bump my 4-banger up to 6-cylinder power for less than the premium for a 435i model I'd go for the 428i, but I see what you're saying. Truthfully, if highway mileage is similar (85% of my 20,000 miles a year is highway) then the 60hp is definitely worth it over the $500 in gas it would cost me.

Well yeah a tune on the 28i is going to close the gap, but there's nothing (aside from money) preventing you from doing the same with a 35i.
These are dynos from BMS showing for each car, stock, and a couple tune options.
328i:
335i:
Takeaways:
Both cars are underrated because their whp numbers are pretty close to their crank hp ratings from BMW.
Stock, the 335i is putting down 57 hp more than the 328i, right about in line with the difference in their claimed power (just that both cars are underrated). As you go to a higher tune, the 335i actually widens the gap a little bit to 72 hp.
Torque, it's the same story but with a bigger difference. The stock 335i puts down 74 lb/ft more, and the top tune is 96 lb/ft more than the top 328i tune.
Just sayin...

My biggest worry is that maintenance would be worse for the 6-cylinder. I usually keep my cars for almost a decade (or try to) and after 200,000 miles maintenance is going to be a real issue.

From what I understand, the reliability/maintenance issues were more on the old N54 twin turbo motor. The N55 single turbo (but stupidly labeled as TwinPower Turbo because its single turbo is a twin scroll design) has a much better track record.
I got my 135is last June, have only put about 5k miles on it (thanks to driving my beater Grand Cherokee in winter) and my maintenance has been gas, windshield washer fluid, 1 coolant top-off, and 1 time adding air to the tires.
BMW says you only even need to change the oil every 10k miles, so I've yet to have an oil change.
Now as time goes on then yeah more issues will probably arise but hey so far so good.
